Hello all you fabulous cake decorators!

I'm thinking of doing a sort of twisted rope "garland" for a wedding cake in April - the bride's colors are ivory and red, so instead of regular drop strings or a zig zag garland - I'm thinking of a red, thin twisted rope garland instead and using red luster dust on after it. My questions are this - has anyone out there done this or have pictures of it? I'm hoping they'll attach with royal icing. Would regular fondant work or do I have to make it out of gumpaste? Do I do each "garland" ahead of time and let them dry and then attach them, or do I put them right on the cake and let them dry there? Also, has anyone had problems with a dark color like red bleeding onto the cake underneath? It will be a fondant cake, and I'm hoping to use MMF for it.

Any help and/or pictures would be so much appreciated! Thanks!

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

That sounds like an interesting idea.

I've never had problems with my colors bleeding.

I would do the rope with MMF...doesn't dry as quickly as fondant and the taste is not bad. You should be fine using the Royal Icing as a glue.

I have a cake in my gallery with fondant ropes painted with gold luster dust. I made the ropes the day before I decorated and painted with luster dust. Then I sealed them in two zip lock bags to keep them pliable. The next day I frosted the cake and covered in fondant. Then I attached the ropes with water. No problemsat all, but using royal is a good idea.

You could try using a rope mold or clay or sugarcraft gun

Rope borders are relatively simple, I've used one here on the Santa cake.

I just rolled out the two pieces of fondant, then twisted them together before placing them around the base of the cake.

I didn't use water, royal icing or anything, the softness of the fondant meant it attached itself to the cake quite well, but then it wasn't a wedding cake, it was just for a class party, so I wasn't being to careful icon_smile.gif

I would use royal icing in tiny dots to attach it, I would be concerned using water, that the red colour would mark your cake.

Good luck icon_smile.gif

Karen, and everyone else icon_smile.gif

You have to be gentle.

I lay the sausages next to each other and roll then gently until they are twisted to my liking, then carefully place them around the cake.

Ok maybe thats my problem... I did not lay them side by side and roll....

I pinched the two colours together at the top and handled each piece, ie twisting one around the other... do you know what I mean??? icon_confused.gif

I will give it another go
