Any ideas on handling a 15" x 2" layer I need to split? I want to split it and fill between the split. The largest cake I have worked with is 12". I am using Duncan Hines French Vanilla cake mix and it seems to hold together pretty good on the smaller size layers.

You can use a cookie sheet with no sides sprinkled with powdered sugar to get it off the bottom layer after you split it and to get it back on top after you have filled. If you don't have that type cookie sheet you can use a cardboard round.

My concern is how to get the top off the bottom after it is split - just slide it over?

After you split it you can slowly and carefully slide the sheet or board under. Just don't lift up too much so you don't break the layer.

When i bake large layers i line my cake pan with parchment paper. Then when splitting that layer i leave the paper on the cake. I take the paper off when i have the cake in place. It helps to keep the thin layer of cake from brakeing on me.

peg818, then you use the bottom of the cake, as baked, for the top when iced?
