A lot of people like the Whimsical Bakehouse BC frosting. For kids' birthday cakes, I personally use the Cake Mix Doctor Chocolate Buttercream frosting a lot and I love it. It is a no cook frosting so it is a snap to make it. For delicious buttercream frostings that need to be cooked, I like to use recipes from the Cake Bible.

I am going to have to buy the Cake Bible book. I keep hearing about it and I think that will be my next buy

If you want the best do not use crisco....use hi ratio and do not use 10x powder sugar....use 6 x commercial. Then you are on your journey.

My ultimate bc comes from ladycakes...I hope she doesn't mine my re-posting it here!

I have had lots of compliments on this one...and it's by far my favorite.

Buttercream Icing with Flour

1 1/2 cups crisco
1/2 cup cake flour
1/2 cup warm water (a little less sometimes)
1 teaspoon popcorn salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon butter flavor
1/2 teaspoon almond
2 lb. bag of icing sugar

First blend the cake flour and crisco in mixer until smooth and blended, while that is mixing add salt and flavorings to warm water and stir to dissolve salt. then add a 2lb. bag of icing sugar and the flavored salt water and mix until smooth and creamy. sometimes I need to add more sugar but sometimes not. depends on the weather. I also add more vanilla, usually I like 2 teaspoons of vanilla and a little less than 1/2 cup of water. you can adjust it and see what you like. I think the salt and cake flour really cuts the sweetness.
