I will be making a snare drum cake and the lady ordering it wanted the sides of it to be silver. I know I can make a gray buttercream, but any suggestions for silver? I did tell her I could do fondant and then paint it silver, but she didn't think she'd like the taste of fondant.

Your ideas and advice are appreciated!

If you use a crusting BC, you can dust the sides of the cake with silver luster dust. Use a large blush brush for easy coverage. Just be gentle so that you don't mess up the BC.

another idea might be to make a chocolate wrap around the cake and paint IT silver.....who doesn't like chocolate???? Or even candy clay.......yummy!!

I think the crusting buttercream idea suggested would work great- it would be even better if you had an airbrush and you could just paint it on in lieu of worrying about knocking up the icing when silvering it. Any chance you have one? I do luster dust & pearl dusts in my airbrush all the time and have never had any problems.

I posted abuncha questions about this not too long ago...I ended up blowing some nu silver luster dust on grey icing to get the silver...I dabbed my brush in it then blew across the brush towards the cake...it worked great.
I tried brushing on bc before and it didnt work, then someone suggested the 'blowing'... thumbs_up.gif

Wow - these are all great ideas! Thanks so much! Luckily this cake is due in a few weeks, so I'll have a couple of practice rounds to see what works best for me. Hmm...I wish I had an air brush...

Did they actually mean that you should blow your BREATH all over a cake you intended on SELLING to someone? I'm not a germaphobe, but I kinda have a hard time with that technique.

***Please don't think I am trying to cause any trouble...just trying to make sure I know what they meant by "blow it on".

When I blow pixie dusts on my cake, I put some in the palm of my hand and gently blow into my hand and then the dust spreads across the cake--I'm probably a good 10 inches away from the cake and I'm not blowing directly on to the cake.

I just have the giggles imagining all of you blowing gently toward your cakes like little kisses icon_biggrin.gif

...lol...no! Your not blowing ON the cake....your blowing on the brush...Colette Peters uses the same method...I have seen her do it on tv....and on one of the cake challenges I have seen others do it... icon_lol.gif

Thanks for clearing that up. I totally would have been spittin' all over the cake and thinkin'...Hey, all the other CC'ers do it! LOL!!! J/K!!!

I have never done pixie dust either...does that just make it all sparkle?

I love this place...I learn so much more than I ever did in Wilton I & II!!!!

All sparkle baby!!! thumbs_up.gificon_lol.gif You can blow it on cakes for all over coverage--which I do with all my girly cakes or you can paint it on by mixing it with vodka (or any other clear spirit) like you can with luster dust. My crown in my photos is painted with a couple of coats of clear gold pixie dust. My son's Star Wars (x-wing fighter) cake has hologram pixie dust all over for the stars.

...is the pixie dust the same as disco dust? I just bought some hologram disco dust from Kitchen Crafts...I only bought it to try it out cuz I hadn't seen it before...I have luster, shimmer, chalk and glitter type stuff...the disco looks like a glitter type stuff.

Yes, they are the same. Another name you may come across is Mystical dust. All the same--very fine glitter. Once you go Pixie/Disco, there is no turning back!! thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

They are non-toxic just like like the luster dusts.
