I am going to be making a farm/john deere cake this saturday and have some great ideas from this site. The question is, when I pull my mmf off the rolling mat with a pizza cutter, it always looks stretched when I place it on the cake. I am using mmf to cover sides of barn and silo too and want it to stay in place. How thick or thin should it be? And is there another method for picking it up without stretching it? Thanks!

I haven't done this type of thing much but I'll give you a bump so you might get your answer (and me too!)

Perhaps your MMF is too fresh? Right after you make it, it'll still be warm and very soft and very easy to stretch more than you want it to. Let it sit for half an hour, check it again, and let it sit a bit longer if you need to (wrapped air-tight of course!)

Or, try rolling it out a bit thicker, and it will probably stretch to a thickness that's closer to what you're aiming for.

I'm having trouble picturing picking up the rolled out fondant with a pizza cutter... try draping it half way over a rolling pin, and quickly carry it over to the cake and put in place.

Hope this helps - good luck!

Dont pull it off the mat....lift up the whole mat and put it over whatever your covering....then peel it off the mat so its going directly on what ya wanna cover thumbs_up.gif

Great ideas, thanks. I made a mess of it anyhow! I made it the day before to let it rest overnight, then I nuked it for like 8 secs. in the microwave. I put shortening on the mat and rolling pin and it still was so sticky. Then when I rolled it out it stretched, when I picked it up it stretched and when I put it on the barn it stretched. I am pretty good at making figures without problems, but when it comes to cover something I am useless. I refuse to do it again!!!!!

LOL!! Sounds like a potential learning experience. Next time, try using icing sugar instead of shortening - some people swear by cornstartch. It's all trial and error, believe me!!

Good luck and don't give up!
