Okay, so I'm sure everyone is getting really sick of me, but I have yet another question for ya! Is a sheet cake (I'm actually making 1/2 sheet cake, but I figure it will be the same answer) 1 or 2 layers usually? I knwo the size of the sheet cake itself is somewhat controversial and varies, however do the layers as well? What is typical - 1 or 2 layers?

Thanks so much!!!!!!

I can only tell you what I prefer to use, which is 2 layers. I see the bakery sheet cakes only use 1 layer. Maybe I should change to 1 layer if that's the general feeling.

It's between you and your customer. Sheet cakes are usually done with only one layer, but it does vary with location, people, etc.

Unless requested, I use 1 layer. They are 2" high.

Excellent - thanks for the help! I guess I'll go with a 1-layer since she didn't say she wanted 2 layers. Easier on me! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi, I sell lots of sheet cakes. When I bake a 11x15 I put 2 cake mixes in it and one layer is fine. When I bake the 12x18 I put in 3 cake mixes and that is just enough too. So I only make mine 1 layer.

I'm going to make my first sheet cake (11x15) in a few days and I was thinking about torting it. Does anyone else do that? Is it hard to do with that size cake? Thanks so much..

I'd go with 1 layer. I started off with 1 layer for a bridal shower cake but thought it was not high enough so I added another layer and it was too high. I don't know if you could tell from the picture in my photos that it was high but also using 2 layers made the cake too heavy to carry.

Sweetbaker - good point about it being too heavy! I beleive I'll go with a 1-layer, since that seems to be the general concensus. I'm looking forward to making this cake, should be fun - will post pics!

As far as a box goes, I haven't even checked yet, but was curious if anyone knew off the top of their heads - what size would I use if I'm making 2- 9x13 cakes and putting them together? I know I need a little extra room around the sides, but do they make them in sizes like 20x28 or will I need to construct my own box?

Thanks again!

I do both but a 2 layer is extra...

9x13 one layer $18, two layer$28

11x15 one layer $30, two layer $50

regarding a big enough container, check out wal-mart. I just bought 2 sterilite containers that were 28qt's and I would say at least 5-6inchs tall. It was certainly tall enough to handle a 4inch high cake w/roses on top and had a good 1 1/2inches on top for room and they cost about $3.97. Just a suggestion.
Thanks

Forgot to mention, the biggest pan I have 12x18x3 and it fits beautifully in there!!
