I've been getting several calls this past week about people wanting to buy cakes from me. It's exciting but scary. I really don't think I'm good enough, but apparently others do. I have people wanting me to create price lists, etc. That's pretty stressful as I really don't think my work is good enough. Am I ready for this? I just don't know. I want to do this legally, but I'm not sure I would get enough business to pay for the license, etc. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in responses here. I guess I just needed to talk about it. Thanks for listening.

You should do it... do it for a month and see if you really like the pressure of timelines and crunches. If you don't stop, if you do keep going. You have to BE SURE you love it before you invest a fortune in supplies and legal issues, so make sure. Be easy with your pricing this month, cover your overhead and make some pocket money... use the orders as practice time to gain more experience and try different techniques.. i think you have great potential, your work already looks good to me... enjoy doing cakes, don't make it a job!

Deep breaths...in - out, in - out...okay. All of us began pretty much the the same way, at least I did.
From thinking how fun this is, I think I could make a birthday cake, I bet I could make a pretty good cake, to "OH MY GOSH, even if I decided to say yes, then what if I screw up"!

You're way past "beginner" your cakes are phenomenal!
Go for it! icon_smile.gif

Well....I am looking at your cakes...and they are very creative! I love them! Why shouldn't you charge?! I agree with the other post that you can do it for a little while and see if you like it. Check the other threads for pricing and help making thing easier on you to prepare! It is fun and you can limit how many you do in a week! If your not able to do a cake just say "no"! Good luck making a decision! icon_biggrin.gif

if they want to pay for it then yes you are good enough. Take your cost of each product and multiply it buy three. Have this as your price minimum and as you feel you get better increase your price.

congrats.

Thanks guys. I knew I could count on you to help me feel better. Has anyone given your customers surveys to fill out to find out how you can do better? I'm thinking about doing that, but I don't want people to think it's tacky. I think it would help me to improve things.

My dream is to some day (when the kids are grown) have a shop. I guess I'm just nervous that this is a beginning to having that dream come true.

like stated above people said I should.. I said no not good enough- remember we are are own worst critics-your cakes are great!! so try it and see how it goes don't be scared .
remember just like there are plenty of things you pay other people to do 'cuz you wouldn't know where to start - well same with cake decorating.

and honestly I have learned sooo much more when forced to come up with ideas and methods ( not that i don't have much more to learn)

Good Luck to you. I would be scared too. But I would love to do cake business. I just dont have no cake shop or funds for cake business. I am still trying to make it happen. You are lucky. Good Luck to you and let us know how you did. Smile. icon_smile.gif

" Has anyone given your customers surveys to fill out to find out how you can do better? "

NO !!! They are NOT decorators....... if you need comments come to the board........ Your Dr. does not ask "how am I doing", does he ? Once when I started a new job, my boss said to me... "no matter how frazzeled you get, NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT"......... They will see you are sweating if you start asking them to critique your work....

toristreats-I am so glad that you had this post. I am in the EXACT some boat! The only cakes that I have decorated are on My Photos. That's it. I am starting to get some orders in but they aren't even until next month! I have to wait to start. At first I think "Yeah I can do this!" Then the next minute I think..."What if people don't like my recipes. Or, what if they don't turn out and they don't think that is what they asked for and they get really upset." I talk myself right out of it. So it is nice that there are others of us that feel the same way. But, if we can make money on something we love then we should try it.

Silver044, your cakes are so professional. Where did you go to school? You do great work. I would like to go to a culinary school someday. I need to wait until my kids are older first.

Thanks everyone for the support. I'm going to give it a shot. I hope it works out. I love doing cakes.
