How Can I Color My Cake Black??

Hello!
I just bought a Wilton checker board pan and would like to make the cake in black and white,instead of brown(chocolate)Has anyone here ever done that and what did you think of it,any other helpfull hints,which batter should I use??

I would try a very dark chocolate cake and add black coloring to it.
