What Did I Do Wrong?

I made mini loaf cakes, leveled the top, dug out a hole and filled with choc / choc chip bc, iced sides and top with bc, covered top only with fondant. Looked fine last night. This morning, however, there's a sinkhole where the filling is. I did not plug back over with cake bc I was dealing with choc cake and white bc and that's a pain.

It was extremely warm in my kitchen last night (had to turn on ac), the butter cream wasn't particularly wanting to stick to the cake (forced it into submission). The bc on the inside was part of the same batch as the bc on the outside, just doctored a bit. Oh, and they spent the night in the fridge.

Why did the sinkhole happen? Any ideas? My soccer fields look like they could cause miniature broken ankles to miniature soccer dudes.

The only thing I can think of is the filling "settled" overnight thus causing the sinkhole.
Maybe someone else knows

I was thinking it must have settled too, but I'm trying to understand why. Like I said, it was warm last night and I had to keep putting the bc in the fridge while I was making the soccer field lines, etc. But right after I applied the main layer of fondant (these were very simply decorated deals), I smooshed it a bit with a flat surface to make sure it all leveled out. Who knows.

Oh, and I've stated before my dislike for cupcakes - that can now be extended to include mini loafs lol.

Okay, just found out I have to do more of these stupid things but with ballet, so I'm bumping it up for advice.

Just a guess but your buttercream probably could not bear the weight of the fondant and the ball on top.

Settling was probably the main culprit, but the thought that it couldn't support the weight of the fondant and soccer ball is certainly valid. It looks like the fondant had too much distance to cover to be sitting only on the filling. Adding the weight of the ball, no matter how light, didn't help matters, either. My guess would either be the weight of the fondant on top of your filling, or the size you scooped out was too large and spread the sides open some causing the center to sink .. maybe next time, use a pastry tip and press into the loaves to fill, like some do for cupcakes instead of scooping out and filling??? just a thought....

I had wanted to use the tip but when I went to buy one, they were out. I decided to use the apple corer, but couldn't find it. Instead I just dug it out with a backhoe (kidding, it was a spoon). The filling was really thick, plus it was loaded with a million choc chips. I'm thinking the idea that when it settled it pushed the sides out to be a pretty good guess. Makes sense due to the conditions. I don't think the ball added much weight because almost all of these boogers got sink holes and not all of the balls are in the center, they're scattered across the fields. You can see on the one picture that the ball is actually to the left of the sinkhole.

Thanks guys.

I would guess settling. That is why I let all my cakes sit for a day before icing them~ I do not think the fondant or the ball would do anything weight wise!
