I'm going to do a communion cake and wanted to have a cross stand upright on it. I tried to make one out of MMF but it didn't come out too good.

Then I thought I would try using a candy mold and making it with candy melts and maybe painting it with luster dust. How can I get it to stand straight up on the cake without shoving too much of it inside so that the proportions of the cross don't get distorted?

Can I make the candy cross on a stick like a lollipop and stick that into the cake? Do you think it would hold straight up or will it tip over. I mean, the cross seems like it might be a bit top heavy?

Any ideas?

When I took the wilton 2 class we made stand up stuff out of color flow.If you look in the galleries under cake classes. You will see bird house, fences, and birds made out of color flow. We made the color flow on top of wax paper placed over a pattern and it had to dry several days. You make an outline of the pattern with royal icing.then pour in the color flow and spread around with a brush. I forgot the pattern need to have a big triangle point on the bottom to stick in the cake. I've haven't done any gum paste. But if you cant find anything else I know this will work for a stand up cross.

A lollipop stick should work fine! Two may be better if your cross it big enough. Just fasten them w/ melted chocolate and let it set. I have done this with no problem.
