I am just starting out in the world of cake decorating. I have loads and loads of practicing ahead of me. If anybody can point me in the direction of a site or anything else that will guide me step by step through the decorating processes would be fantastic. thanks in advance for your help.

Just bake lots of cakes! Don't wait for an "occasion." Try out new recipes and different techniques and before you know it, you'll be an old hand.

Welcome aboard! You are in the right place, the others are right. Anything you want to know is here and if not ask. You might look into some classes at a local craft store too icon_smile.gif

I've learned more on here than anywhere else, probably.

I did really like my Wilton classes, though. They gave me a good set of techniques from which to develop my own style, and I really liked the hands-on aspect of it. I would also suggest checking your library, and seeing if they have any good cake decorating books. You'll need to look at the books to see which kind of instructions you like best. My library is full of old, very 70's looking books, but there is one copy of a Collette Peterson book that I've checked out several times.

Mostly, just have fun!

Hi annieliz, I'm new at this too, and I think this website it the best place you could have come. I have learned so much from the articles/tutorials and knowledgable people here it's amazing. Mind you I haven't put all of it into practice, but I know that help is here if I run into problems.

Enjoy!

Hi annieliz. I'm a newbie too. I really just found this site, and it has come in much more handy than any wilton's classes that I've ever taken. It has more ideas, techniques, and instruction than any and I mean any other site that I've been on. I get American Cake Decorator Magazine, own a library of cake decorating books, and still I've learned more from this site than from any of those things. Cake Central were have you been all my cake decorating life. But remember, practice makes perfect in anything you do. I'm still practicing and working on getting better, I don't think my cakes will ever be perfect, but what challenge would that be! Good luck, you are already on a good start!

Hello & Welcome to Cake Central - we're just one big happy cakey family. Use the Search tab at the top of the home page to search for anything you can image related to cakes and subjects.

Your local Michaels or Hobby Lobby stores offer very inexpensive (sometimes at half price) basic cake decorating classes and are worth every penny.

Go to the local cake decorating stores in your area, and take a serious look around - especialy at the books/magazines to inspire you. And, most importantly ask questions, those specialty shops will be extremely happy to assist you - after all, you'll become a new customer for them.

But most importantly HAVE FUN, this cake decorating hobby is sooooo much fun! icon_biggrin.gif

P.S. Take a few minutes (yea - right) and check out the photos in the gallery - you'll never look at a cake or cookie the same way again.

I can promise you that anything you want to know or learn, someone here will know. You can always PM them for a quicker response too.
You might want to pick a couple of techniques at a time and practice on a cake dummy, that way you don't have to bake, and won't have to waste the icing because you can reuse it for more practicing.
Welcome to CC you are going to love it here.

thanks for the warm welcome. i've bought a few basic things to start out. I'm going to "play" with some buttercream this weekend and see how big of a mess i can make lol. my fiance and i are both on diets due to the wedding in november so i've asked all my co-workers if they're down with taking home some screwed up cakes while i practice. I'll try to make sure I post pictures as i progress. Thanks
