Why oh why can I make 3D and sculpted cakes, and have no problem with fondant cakes, but I can't decorate a simple sheet cake or a plain 10 inch round cake?!?!?!?! I have an order for a round cake tomorrow, with a cross make of roses for a funeral reception, and it looks like crap! I still haven't gotten the hang of making icing in my 6 qt KA, and my icing had tons of air bubbles in it. It's rainy here today, and my icing never crusted, so I had an awful time getting it smooth. The thing looks like crap! I'm almost embarassed to take any money for it. I may trash it and go buy them a bakery cake from somewhere! My dh says it's because I hate doing sheets and simple rounds, and really prefer the 3D or wedding cakes, and he's probably right. I'd rather do the cakes that have the WOW! factor, and maybe I have a crappy attitude when I start these sheets or rounds. Thanks for letting me vent!

I hear you. I only do this as a hobby, but people know not to ask me for a sheet cake - I don't like to do them. They can pick those up just about anywhere. I prefer tiered cakes - much prettier, and you can do so much more with them! And sculpted cakes are so individual. I'm sure there are many more who feel the same icon_smile.gif.

Hey,

Think of it this way...what a great opportunity to REALLY practice your flower making skills!?? Don't worry too much about the icing/smoothing part. Try to focus on the flowers, and maybe challenge yourself to make them look as real as possible. (they won't even notice the cake, if they're "WOWED" by the flowers??)

Good Luck!

Don't be too hard on yourself. Your cake is probably very pretty but by comparison with your fancy ones it's too simple in your mind. I'm sure your customer will love it.

I am the SAME way!!! I hate doing sheets, I never know what to do with them. When someone wants a sheet I try to talk them into something else. Plus they're so boring!! icon_lol.gif

I just realized that my vent may have sounded arrogant, and I didn't mean it to if it did. I'm not one of the greats of decorating, and that's obvious. I usually don't take these types of orders...I send them to wally world, but I've dropped lots of money in this buying tools and registering my business and things, and dh thinks I'm dumb for turning orders away. I just hate to do these...and it does look like crap! My 6 year old son came in while I was boxing it up and complaining about how ugly it is, and siad "Mommy, I think it's pretty. Besides, it's for a funeral...the dead guy won't even know what it looks like!" Gotta love kids!

I know what you mean! I'm making a cake for my church's 50th anniversary celebration, and they're paying for it. They had originally said a sheet cake, but I told them that if they let me do something pretty, I would give $50 off as my gift for the 50th anniversary. Sheets are ugly. icon_razz.gif

Could your problem with icing maybe be the weather? I know when it's muggy out, I can't take a cake anywhere............

The picture is in my photos now...it was too big to add as an attachment here. It's already out the door with the customer, nothing I can do now. They did like it though. I guess they just don't know any better!

I feel your pain. I thought I was the only one who had that problem. Ask me to do something 3-D and I've got it. Ask me for plain and it's ugly! Go figure!

I've had a lot of orders for sheet cakes and I don't think any of them were ugly. It's about what the customer wants. If someone asks me about doing something I don't do or don't want to do I steer them to someone or someplace where they CAN get it. I've never felt obligated to do or learn to do anything and everything people want. I do what I like, but then I'm not doing this for my livlihood either. It's for my pleasure and that's why I can turn away an order for whatever reason. I got pounced on for saying this a few years back but it's how I do my own business. I do the same in my woodworking business. As my podiatrist told me recently, "if you say you can do everything, you are the MASTER of nothing."

I'd prefer to do a few things well than to do everything just so so.

Your cake is FAAAAAARRRRRR from the ''crap'' you said it was. It's pretty, your roses are nice and the color is nice too. Put a smile on your face and know that your customer is happy with it. That, I'm sure of!!!!
