Well today I went to a local grocery store and visited their bakery. I'm making a doll cake, and wanted to see about purchasing a box -nothing else just the box. So the clerk after much hesitation got the box, and I thought great. Then I saw the sticker she made up for it $5 -for JUST the box. So I relunctantly buy it, after all not that many cake boxes will work for the doll cakes. So I get out to my car, and am driving home, and discover that this cake box had previously been USED! icon_mad.gifthumbsdown.gif It had tape on it, and other areas where some of the design had been pulled away when the tape was ripped off, not to mention there was FROSTING on the insert piece, and on the inside of the box. So I stopped at a closer store (same chain of store) down the road and explained I had just bought the box, and that it was previously used. So we go back to the bakery and I'm given a new box, and the store clerk says "well have a good day" and I'm like excuse me...you expect that this resolves the issue, personally I think I should be refunded the money and have the box replaced. So the clerk finally refunds my money, and I expected the Used box would be tossed...wrong thumbsdown.gif Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the bakery person put it back on the shelf ewwwww icon_eek.gif

That's disgusting!
You need to hike on up here to Busch Gardens area and get a bunch of boxes at the Honey Bee so you don't have to do that again!

OMG! that IS gross!
If you do decide to tell the health department make sure that you aren't suppose to be selling out of your home; I wouldn't want you to get into trouble. Maybe then you can make up a story!? icon_razz.gif Or maybe just tell the manager! That might work!

Good luck getting boxes next time! icon_biggrin.gif

Hey Newly... although I am not into 'stirring the pot' so to speak, I would not let this slip by. This is about health issues now. I would write a letter to the store manager... perhaps the district manager or home office, and let them know that you are well concerned with the legality of reusing a food container like that and expect that they would want to remedy that situation. They could really be putting people in danger!! And $5 for a box? RIDICULOUS!!!

I would have been ok with a replacement. Not sure I would have expected the money back. Nice that they did that. Could be they saved the box so they had evidence to show the manager. And/or the box would be sent back to the manufacturer as defective or something. Who knows.

Man that's gross!!! Good thing you caught it in time to get a replacement though! blechhhh.. And five bucks for one box is outrageous, but I know you were in a bind. One option I've heard of here on CC is boxes from the UPS store because they have irregular sizes.

Yuck! That is so gross. I can't believe they charged $5 for that box. FYI, I just discovered that the Party America near me has cake boxes for sale. I don't know if that is a national chain or what, but you could try a local party supply store for boxes.

I buy my boxes at ACMoore or Michaels...if the cake is bigger or taller than that, I use Domino pwdr sugar boxes from Sam's, they are perfect for most other sized cakes, and very sturdy.

I think that you should tell the health authorities. If you cannot bring your own food into a restaurant because of health code reasons then you should not be selling a used cake box. That is just disgusting.
