taxes! Tell me I'm freaking out over nothing. I am opening a home based bakery. I'm fine with the DBA, permits, certificates of health but when it comes to taxes its not so cut and dried. I feel like I have ADD when I look at the tax websites. Any personal experiences would be helpful. i'm drained from looking at websites and trying to follow them. Im in NY
i thought about bartering. thats what i'm doing for my graphic design and business cards. NY is pretty bad for taxes. 8% where I am. I think I'll end up going to the new business center at our CC. but I was hoping someone would say. You have to pay, fed, self-employement, sales and etc. and here's how you get the forms
I hired someone to do my taxes for the first time this year and it was the BEST thing I've done for my business/sanity. Seriously.
I don't have the patience (or time!) to research and learn all the state and federal tax laws, ya know? Paying someone to do it is well worth it to get it done - and get it done properly.

What tax is 8%?
You don't pay federal or self employment taxes until you file your income taxes. And your sales tax should be explained to you when you get your sales tax ID #. You might want to consult a CPA who can help you set your books up or buy quick books. If you are looking up information all over the place I can see how you could get confused!
i do my own taxes for my family. I used H&R block last year online because it was free. Very comfortable with all of that.
I know that groceries aren't taxed but I figured that because the cakes fall under wholesale that I would have to pay(collect) sales tax on them. The other thing is the self-employment tax. Paying for Social Security. Basically I don't want to get to the end of the year and find that I wasn't charging enough for the cakes to cover my time, materials and taxes and then making sure I have enough set aside so I'm not running into a hole. My budget is shoestring. I can do the bookkeeping. I want to be as involved as I can in that aspect. I just got so confused looking at the irs website and trying to figure out all the little categories I could possibly fall under. Perhaps I will rework my budget and see if I can afford a consult with an accountant. Thank you. all for your help. ![]()
