Well.... if you bake and the cake has a dome on it, you could just carve out the lower portion of the face, where the mouth is, then cover the whole thing in fondant, and I think you'd be close.

Or...you could build up the top portion of the face with either fondant or rice krispy treats, then cover with fondant.

Some recipes dome more than others, so I'd probably see how my cake came out of the oven before I decided for sure. But that's me.

i'd start w/ the soccerball pan.

then carve away mouth area and use the carvings to build up the the nose (use BC as the glue)

crumbcoat the whole thing.

then either BC for the skin or fondant (this looks to be fondant)

then fondant for the mask and eyes.

or if you don't want to buy a special pan, just use 3 2" layers. stack like normal (I'd likely torte them too) and let set. Then carve away. start by making the whole thing sort of curved/domed on top. Then carve away the bottom parts. And I agree fondant would be good.

could you build it up from underneath with rice krispys? I am thinking of a tutorial I saw somewhere doing a thomas the train face too that was built up from behind with fondant.
