I've been asked to make an Elmo cake. Any suggestions for getting a good tasting buttercream with red coloring? I've always used the Wilton colors, and the red always ends up tasting icky with a definite after taste. Even my 4 yr old doesn't like to eat it! Any suggestions or helpful hints are welcome! THANKS!!!

You definitely have to try using Americolor Super Red. It works great and you don't have to use that much so it doesn't alter the taste of your BC. Americolor Super Black is great also. I use both quite a bit and also used both for a recent Elmo cake I made for my son's birthday (in my photos if you want to take a look).

You can use a package of coolaid just mix it with some water before you add it to the BC!

I did an Elmo Cake about a month ago. I used regular buttercream icing and made it a deep pink then added no taste red and it turned out great.

I've used red kool aid to start wit hbefore, but I wouldn't want to cover a cake wit hit...it was very sour, but did help with the red color!

Does anyone know if these colours (sorry colors to you non-Canadians) are available in Canada? Decided to order online here, but just about died when I noticed the cost to ship the order was going to be more than the cost of my order (and that was the cheapest choice 3-4 weeks I think it was)!! Wow.

OR - anywhere in Buffalo or Niagara Falls? Somewhere close to the border? I'm only about 30 minutes to the Falls (20 if I'm driving)! Trying to find baking supply stores other than Michael's and Bulk Barn, but having a really hard time doing so. There are a couple Mississauga, but it's such a long drive from where I live. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

(Sorry - didn't mean to take over the original post...)

TIA
