i put a small piece of double sided tape on the ribbon where it overlaps. others i know use royal icing to "glue" it. i also wrap the ribbon around my pan first to make sure its the right length, then just carefully slide it around the cake. i eyeball it to make sure its straight. if its on a fondant covered cake, you can slide it a little bit after its in place to make it straight.
