I am getting anxious now, I posted yesturday that my little mermaid topsy turvy cakes bottom tier collapsed on me. Now I have a groom's cake next weekend that is a football helmet I was going to carve and taper slightly towards the bottom to look like a helmet and I was feeling pretty good about it till my distastreous little mermaid cake. ANy suggestions for carving the helmet cake with success I have heard it suggested to use a dome pan with an 8" base for the top of the helmet but I don't have that or know where to find it so I was going to carve it. I am going to give myself 5 - 8" layers of chocolate almond sour cream cake (dr cake mix) to work with. Any suggestions to avoid disaster. Or helpful hints from anyone with experience on a football helmet cake. The bride is so excited about this cake it is a suprise for husband to be.
Is it possible to use the 3-D ball pan for your helmet? Mine always hold up, whether it's a fish or pumpkin. Good luck!
I have never made one either, but I will also help your thread keep rolling. This is my guess, and purley (sp?) a guess because I have not done scuplted cakes yet, is you use a heavier cake like pound cake. Maybe it is "stronger" and can take the weight.
Just brain storming here and getting soaked. ![]()

I have done several helmet cakes-I think there is one in my pics- but I have never been brave enough to carve one. I use the sportsball pan. If you need help with that let me know.
