My husband is in a Military school right now and one of his classmates is getting promoted (Lt. Col.) and they want a cake. He is in the Swedish Air Force and all that is asked is that I include the Swedish Air Froce Roundel on the cake.

Any ideas on what else I can do so the cake is not so plain and boring?

Can you carve a sheet cake to look like the military jacket? That would look nice with all the embellishments and would be so speical for the guest of honor.

I would glitter the "crowns", and maybe add the Swedish flag too somewhere.......

maybe carve a sheet cake to look like a plane and put his emblem on the plane? I once did that for my daughter's air cadet party and it looked great. The plane was really easy to carve.

You can also write it in Sweedish. Find a nice saying or translate congrats into sweedish using an online translator.
I can assure you that he would be very flatterred to see your effort in writing it in his language and not yours. Europeans are patriotic but don't go gaga over their flag like Americans do so language would send him the proper message.
I know your cake will be wonderful as it will be different from what he would get at home. He will appreciate your efforts I can guarantee that since Scandinavians are very much family focussed and that would be something a family would member would do for him. So you would be showing him that you are treating him like family which in the end is the greatest compliment of all.
You will do a great job. Good luck and don't forget to show us your cake.

Look at CakeMommies military cakes. She has quite a few of them and they are all wonderful. She incorporates a lot of braid and emblems on hers and it really makes it stand out.

Good luck.

My husband is Swedish, and I can assure you, they DO go "gaga" over their flag.... they are just as proud of their country as we are of ours....

What about some blue swags on the side of the cake with the crowns at the joining points with the emblem dusted with luster dusts in the center of the cake.

I've been curious about camouflage. What do you all think would happen if MMF was coloured in 3 seperate batches. Then the 3 different colours were slightly warm, and small balls were dropped randomly then rolled flat into one uniform sheet. Do you think a camouflage effect would be accomplished or would it be a baby poop coloured mismash of nothingness.

I really like the idea of writing in Swedish, I never would have thought of that.

Inga, how would I write "Congratulations on your promotion"

I think I will also include the flag somehow. I am planning on doing a 9" inch round so maybe the emblem on top and the flag on the side. I like the swag idea as well but not sure if I could pull that off.

Maybe have planes "flying" out of the cake or have the shadows of planes on the side of the cake.

Thank you soo much Inga! I tried to use an online translater but it was too hard to figure out and I was afraid to write it wrong. Now I know I will have it right, thanks so much!
I think I am going to end up making an FBCT of the Roundel and a MMF swedish flag draping the cake somehow. They are not requesting a fancy cake at all so this should do it. I just hope it turns out like I see it in my head.
Thank to all of you for you input!
