are you making them from bc/royal or fondant?
You might want to try roses on a stick:

Here are some helpful videos - there's one on icing roses:

After calming down I went back downstairs and gave it another shot. I think my bc icing was too stiff. So after fixing that problem, I attempted another and it came out better. As of now, I have about 7 roses made, but they look nothing like the book that's for sure! Better than going in empty handed I guess and I will just have to keep practicing.
It is the War of the Roses!! LOL!!

lol @ war of the roses
I used to make my bc too stiff when I started out also. Try putting a little piping gel in it to thin it out. It makes it come out smoother ![]()
I'll have to try the hershey's kiss trick sometime![]()
Thanks for the piping gel idea!
I was finally able to make some roses that didn't look too horrible, but still need alot of work! I made the final cake in class tonight and I will post the piciture tomorrow.

I tried using a hersery kiss for the base this last weekend and will never make another rose without it again!!! It made it so nice and no more two bags!!!!

You only need two bags/tips if you are doing it the "Wilton" way. When I started working at a grocery store bakery, I was expected to do it just using the rose tip -- now I can't believe I ever tried doing it the other way. Using just the rose tip is so much faster - we had to be able to make 8 full roses in under a minute -- yes, it is possible! We would just squeeze out a blob using the rose tip for the base and then proceed from there.
