or do you mean a cake stencil?? like with a design cut out or something that you set on the cake and then sift powdered sugar or cocoa powder or use petal dusts or something??? If that's what you mean you could definitely use household items, I make them all the time out of the lid to big tubs of margarine, just draw the design with a perm. marker and cut with an exacto knife, and they're reusable too!!

consider using inkjet transparencies.

advantage: can print any design to them

cut with: a sharp X-acto type knife

(join me now in a chorus of "here comes the blood" to the tune of "here comes the sun" -- at least around me anyway)

CAUTION: print the design flipped backwards so when you cut it out, now residual ink gets on cake. (if really concerned...was the transparency after cutting it out.

The last stencil I did I took a peice of paper and covered both sides with contact paper. Then I taped my patern on TOP of my covered paper. Then I took a sharp knife and cut the outline of my letters. Once it was all cut out I laid it on my cake and then used luster dust to paint over my stencil.

Take a look at the black cake in my photoes. I used this for the company logo so I could get it silver and match the company logo exactly.

Hope this helps.
