Hello fellow cc'ers...this is the latest cake that I made this weekend for my daughter's 4th birthday( It's in my photos...I can't for the life of me figure out how to make my pics smaller to attach in forum!!). I don't think I have ever been so dissapointed in a cake in my life!!!
I was so ahead of the game, I had all of my cakes baked ahead of time, etc. And then all h@#ll broke loose!!! The first layer was lopsided, which caused the whole thing to tilt...I had cake buldging from trying to "push" it over, etc!!! Oh well, a couple of lessons well learned I suppose! Thanks for looking! ![]()

Your cake is lovely. Infact all of your cakes are!! Well done. As you said a lesson learnt. I think that when you do a cake for your own children its never as good as you want it to be.
I cant work out how to get the pictures into the forums. Hopefuly someone reading might help us both.
Well done
Oh I just looked-you are being WAY to hard on yourself...really it is a VERY cute cake. And didn't your daughter (and probably the rest of the family) just love it ?!? AND I bet they enjoyed every bite, too.
We are our own worst critics. My grandaughter would jump for joy seeing a cake like this ![]()
I've been there. Sometimes our cakes turn out better than we expect, other times it's just not meant to be! My worst cake was one I made for my daughter last year... my first castle cake. It fell apart on the way to the park. I was crying when my guests arrived! I learned a lot about structural engineering that day! lol
Your cake is still beautiful! Don't feel so bad. Anyone would appreciate your talent and understand that you're working with cake afterall! ![]()
I think in all honesty - you are being WAY too hard on yourself, b/c seriously if the cakes were as awful as you were letting on, you probably wouldn't have posted the pics, and you probably wouldn't have even wanted to attract attention to your cakes by the post.
I think it turned out great and I know your pain my daughter's 5th birthday cake didn't go so well this weekend the entire third tier crumbled. So I feel your pain no biggie off to bigger and better besides my daughter looooovvveed her cake and I am sure your daughter did too. Remember we are always harder on ourselves.
I think the cake is great. Whenever a cake doesn't turn out exactly as we imagine, we think it's a complete diaster. Truth is we are WAY to hard on ourselves (me included) and others won't even realize the struggle we had.
You are way too hard on yourself. In fact, I was just admiring your Starburst roses on the home page before I read this thread. I think it is absolutely adorable. I really don't see any of the problems that you mention. We are too hard on ourselves.
I know that as "cake people", flaws are more obvious to us than the average cake viewer and I know we always see our own flaws the most but honestly, that cake is SUPER cute and I don't see anything wrong with it at all! Great design and I love the colors. I bet your daughter absolutely loved it!
i know how it is to have a cake not measure up to the mental image you have.... however my dear your cake is quite cute and fun and you are being wayyyy to hard on yourself !!
ditto what everyone else is saying! Your cake is really really great!!! Just think of your daughter's face when she saw it for the first time and look at it through her eyes. She's lucky to have such a talented mom!
I loved your cake. How do you make starburst roses????????????????????
Very cute, I love it and I'm sure your daughter loved it, too!!
Thanks so much for all of the wonderful comments
!!! I am definitly my own worst critic, and I know that!! They are just supposed to be absolutley "perfect"...you know?? Well, on the bright side she did love it and I got alot of practice with my bc smoothing!!
Thanks again!
Jenn
Your cake is adorable! I agree with others that its often hard to be pleased with your own work... you have been staring at the cake for hours and you know where every crack and bubble is and by the time you are done, you are just ready to get it out of your sight! Usually the recipient of the cake, seeing it with fresh eyes, is in awe and its a reminder that its not so bad.
Regarding posting pictures on threads... The most common problem seems to be that the pictures are too large, go here -

and follow the directions. Works like a charm!
I'm chuckling a bit... I made a similar post last week about my daughter's 4th b-day cake. Maybe it has something to do with those 4-year-old girls.... ![]()
I had a horrible time with my cake and was disappointed. But I did learn that I was harder on myself and it really was not necessary. Did your duaghter love the cake? Did it make her smile? Did she say that you were the best? That is all that matters. ![]()
Your cake turned out lovely--you recovered and the end result was a beautiful cake. Believe me, I know we are all hard on oursleves, especially when it comes to our kids. Each cake is a lesson learned and then we do even better next time.
So, chin up! You did great! ![]()
I am going to be trying this cake also very soon. This is a tough cake so you should cut yourself some slack. Yours turned out gorgeous! I can only hope mine turns out like this did you use bc or fondant? I was thinking about fondant for all of it, maybe a little easier. ANy tips would be greatly appreciated!
