Hi, all. I ws wondering if it is possible to ust pillars w/o the separater plates? I am still working on a design for my daughter's sweet 16 cake. I am going to be using heart shaped pans-9" and 6". I was going to place 2 9" hearts side by side with a few inches in between and try to use the pillars to place the 6" on top centered between them. Is that even possible, because I don't have heart shaped separater plates? Thanks for any and all help!!

You might try the push in pillars. You don't need the separator plates with these. I know you can get them on the wilton website or out of the wilton catalog.

Thanks so much, lucey. I will have to try to get a hold of some of those. Didn't even think about that! icon_biggrin.gif

Even if you use the push in pillars, wouldn't you have to use a separator plate underneath the 6" cake?

I'm sure you'd have to have a cake board (or just cardboard cut in a heart to fit your cake) at least, something to support the cake, or the pillars might go up through the top cake, but you wouldn't have to have the plastic plate. Janice

I think that if you have the round plates, you could cut a cardboard to fit under the heart cake then fix that to a amaller round plate and do it that way. Just make sure the cardboard is strong enough to support the cake!

Thanks for the info, everyone. I was definitely going to use the cake boards. I am actually thinking of using the wooden dowel rods and stacking the 6" centered over both of the 9" cakes-with some dowels evenly spaced in both of the 9". Would that work, do you think?

Will the top tier be sitting on the lower cakes ( no seperation?) then the wood dowels and cardboard will work fine if you will be raising it above the lower cakes I would not use the wood dowels to support the cake

I would then use a round plate to hold the heart cake if you do not have the heart plate or you could use the hidden pilars as they are wider

but the best would be use a smaller round plate on the pillars then place your cake on a larger heart board and place on the round plate. The round plate will support but not show.

That's a good idea, msmeg. I was going to try to have the smaller heart raised up above the 2 larger hearts. But since I can't seem to figure out a way to do it, I may just stack them up. If I try the way that you mentioned-with the round plate-won't I need a plate on top of the larger hearts to put the pillars on? Let me know. You all are such a great help to me. Thanks!!

If you have the pillars that go into the bottom teir then you do not use a lower plate such as the spike pillars ,hidden pillars or the clear twist ones

Guess it depends on what you have access to

if you all you have is 2 6 inch plates and pillars use those and put the heart on the cardboard on the top plate.

or cut 2 plates from masonite and glue the pillars on

Is there time to order what you need or are there andy others you can borrow from????

or forget the heart and put hearts on the round top teir.

Thanks for the advice, msmeg. I don't really have access to much decorating stuff here. And since I had never used pillars before, that is what led to my question. I do have a 10" round separator set, but it is too large for what I need. I also had some swan pillars-got them a long time ago and was wondering if I could have used them w/o the plates. I will just have to get a good plan laid down for the supplies I have. Most of the stuff I order takes 4-6 weeks to get here. So I was just trying to figure out what to do incase they don't make it in time if I ordered. I may just place them on top of each other, with no separation involved. Thank you again.
