How many of your cakes are your own design and how many are your take on a cake you've seen?
And... I know there has been a lot of debate on selling copyrights cakes like Dora and such, but what about generic images you find on the internet and in 1.00 store coloring books? Do you draw a line for a business and not do Lightning McQueen or can you get away with it if you buy a matchbox with him and put it with the cake?
Most brides bring in a photo of a cake or cakes that they like. I tell them that picking a wedding cake is a cut-n-paste decision ..... this border, that set up, those florals, etc.
And let's be real .... when a bride wants a "plain cake with just ribbon at the bottom", or "just some dots" or " just scrolls on the side", how original can you make those?
Not every cake has to be a designer original .... but it should be at least close to what the bride wants for her wedding day.
About 90% of my cakes are my take on someone elses design, very few cake designs are copyrighted, and if they are they will say so, so you are free to copy, just give credit where it is due..
Same on the web. Most articles are and will say so, alot of clip art is and you have to buy it (and alot isnt) music is, blah blah.
Unless it says so directly in the coloring book that all of the generic images are licensed or copyrighted, you can use them.
Honestly, the only 2 cakes I have done that came straight from my brain are my poker cake and my latest one for the Humane Society, and that was only because my exhaustive search of the web and here at CC didn't produce close to what I was looking for, and that, is rare.
