Ok Ladies,
I finally finished the blue's clues cake...ok so here's the story. I get a last minute order on Tuesday for a cake for Sunday, but I'm going out of town Sunday so it has to be done by Saturday. Find out that she wants a 3 tier cake w/ a Blue's Clues theme. (it was for my sister in law's sister in law, so I was going through my own Sister in law the whole time) She wants both bavarian cream and strawberry as her flavors. Then find out that she wants it kinda whimsical like topsy turvy but I had already stacked and filled the cake so I tried to carve it slimmer on the bottom than top. I guess I forgot and made the cake board under each cake too big, and had to try to cover it up w/ decorations. The top tier gave me the most problem it looked like it was going to flop over any minute.

I literally stayed up all night and didn't sleep til 10 am the next morning, man was I tired. No matter how hard I tried I could not get the darn cake to smooth out. I put a dam b4 the filling and let it chilled in fridge but still it bulge! Why is that? HOw can I prevent that? And how can I get my MMF to go on smooth, especially at the bottoms? See how it always crinkle. I rub from top to bottom but still seem to have extra fondant at bottom. I used skewers as dowels. Couldn't fit the whole cake in fridge so could only stack bottom 2 and finished the top at the last minute. I cut Blue (on top) from MMF and painted it w/ gel colors from bottle. It was so soft I had to prop up w/ toothpicks from behind.

I'm not really happy w/ the cake but I guess for now it will have to do.
Well, any critiques and tips to improve on this (as I have another similar cake this coming weekend) would be great! I was asked how much b4 I did the cake & I'mnew at this so never know how much to charge so I said $40....now I want to kick myself in the head! it was soo much work I think if I do this again I would charge $90. Does that sound bout right?

I forgot to ask. the cake was really high. I baked a total of 6 cakes, 2 on each tier and they were each torted and filled. 4", 6" & 8" so exactly how much would this feed?

Thank you kels_bells & evryone else for your help.
Thanks!

I think it is very cute! Love the different designs on each tier. And Blue is verycute too. Sorry you had so many problems, but really your cake is very nice and I am sure they loved it!!

You charged way too little for all of the supplies and work you did!!

Wow, I think it looks great. You seem to have the same problem as me.. you don't like to charge...ha ha..
Way underpriced, my goodness.. I thought i was undercharging for a full sheet cake, no torting, just buttercream and simple design and I charged $50.00
Sorry you had all those problems, pulling an all nighter sucks.. done it.
But it does look very nice. Hope your second one goes nice and smooth for you.

Uh...You should have charged more than 90. very cute. Next time someone says oh yeah and topsy turvey at the last minute. Say I'm sorry that's more money I've got it built already.

Definitly undercharged - I know how you feel but honestly it's an adorable cake! The design is super!

The fondant will get smooth with practice, I still have trouble getting it perfectly smooth. Just keep plugging away.

According to Wilton party servings I think it would serve somewhere around 40 servings maybe? (from memory so I could be off).

Blue looks great, always give your price after you have your design. I usually have 2 designs ready the one I "want" to make and the one I think they will actually pick (the cheaper version) LOL!

I do see the flaws you are talking about, but seriously you did a great job! "Non-cakers" do not see the flaws the same way.

You could totally get more than $90.00, don't sell yourself short, I would charge per slice on that type of cake. I start at $3.00 base price then I charge extra per slice depending on the covering, for that I would charge $1.00 extra, for the extra cakes, time and decorating. If they feel it is to expensive, let them go else where. That is my opinion anyway. I used to be so kind and practically give my cakes away, one of my clients actually talked me into charging what I am worth. Good luck!! Nice cake by the way, I love it!!

I love it! I'd feel very proud of this cake! But I do agree with the other posts that you undercharged...I'd expect to pay CAD$100 on this at the very least.

thank you ladies for the compliments & answers... & for making me feel better about the cake. It was fun but a lot of work. Do you think next time I shouldn't make it so high? My sister just made a comment that it seems off balance b/c it's so high?

That cake is ADORABLE! thumbs_up.gif My daughter would love something like that for her birthday-Blues Clues is her favorite show. I think I will have to add that to my favorites... Great job!

I don't think it looks off-balance by accident...rather on-purpose...didn't you say that you carved the cake a bit to give a whimsy effect? I think it achieves that goal and looks yummy!

yes, I did carve it to look a little whimsy... & thank you amecakes...

I forgot to mention that when it was time 2 clean up I wanted to kick myself even harder! I think i manage to use every last bowl & spoons in my kitchen! then there where icing & powder sugar everywhere... I cringe just to think about cleanup for the next cake I have to do...
