Well lets see, I discovered fondant cakes when me and my daughter were looking at cakes in a cake book at the store the other day, trying to find her a cake for her 3rd birthday. Now I'm really interested in making one and if it goes good I would like to make them all the time. I use to bake all the time and loved (love) it, but I would love to decorate also.

So the questions are, after I told my story, lol.
I would like to know if the all ready made fondant is good and if you make your own cake batter or if I can use out of a box. Is there a certain pan I have to use or since I'm poor, lol, if I can use my little like 3" high pans and stack them. umm just really the basics because I don't do to good on the instructions on sites I just don't understand, but coming from someone it's a whole lot easier. So any info on fondant tier cakes (birthday) would b so nice.

Thanks, I'd appreciate it!

1st >> WELCOME!!!

no not all ready made fondant is good especially, seems almost all here agree, Wilton's. Many use Satin Ice. And many more make their own --> MMF http://www.cakecentral.com/article47-How-to-Make-and-Decorate-with-Marshmallow-Fondant-MMF.html

yes those 3" pans will work....torte and fill them for extra height and flavor.

some fondant is good, some is nasty. you can also try to make your own (I do, as do many here). some use box mixes as is, some "doctor" them, some do only scratch baking, some do both.

Like anything else, fondant does take practice.

re: mix / scratch -- very personal and debateable

for the from a box mix -- many doctor it w/ the extender recipe: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1977-0-Cake-Mix-extender.html
