Getting Fondant Smooth

I am having problems getting my fondant covering smooth, I usually rip it in the process or it is to heavy and it stretches, HELP!!

Thanks JanH, your so wonderful with your links, wow, how do you possibly pretain that much information? You are amazing!! I did find a really helpful tool that I could purchase from the UK, how do you find out how much $$ in U.S. dollars it is? Weird. They seem to have the corner market on cake decorating supplies! Pretty neat really!
