Usually the buttercream will still be soft....so you just press it into the icing. You can also you some icing on the back of the fondant pieces and press it in...(in my pic's I have a little cottage, and the sign...went right in the icing...looked nicer that way i thought)
Or you don't have to press so hard and it will be raised.

Hope that helps a bit.Nicole

I paint water (very little) on the back of the fondant and just attach it. When I do butterflies I usually stick a toothpick into the bottom and make them stand up on the cake.

I have recently discovered that piping gel works GREAT for this purpose.

A lot of times my bc is already crusted before I'm ready to add the fondant decorations. I just spread the piping gel on the back of the fondant and press it onto the sides of the cake, hold for a few seconds and that's it. Even quite heavy decorations seem to stay this way (flat ones).
