I am going to attempt to make a candyland themed cake for my daughters 4th birthday and was going to do it tiered. I went to my local store to get pans (I'm newbie very new) and the 3 pan square set is huge. I want the top layer to be the castle and the rest of the cake to be the game board. I need help with ideas on how to make this cake but not make it so big that we will be eating cake for a month. Keep in mind that I have never ever ever attempted anything like this. I have made one cake in my life - I got this great idea for my sons birthday that I would try to make one and I have attached the picture or at least I think I did. So, any advice that any one can give me so that my daughters cake is not horrible would be greatly appreicated!!! icon_lol.gif

Hi and welcome to CC!

I think this sounds like a great idea! Here are a couple of pictures I found on the internet that may give you some ideas. Good luck and post a picture when you're done! icon_smile.gif

maybe the castle on top could be made out of styrofoam like a fake cake, that would cut down on the servings, then it could be saved for your daughter as a keepsake or something....I think the tiered Idea sounds awesome....maybe you could make some royal icing ladders and chutes....and put them on the sides from tier to tier and then play different little candies all around for decoration....cute idea

i love the idea about the chutes and ladders and you could use the wilton gingerbread house kit to make the castle(very simple and fun to do) you could also add chocolate "pouring over the side of one cake. please post a pic i cant wait to see it!!

Thank you so much for the ideas & the Welcome!!! I can already tell that I'm in good company on this site!! icon_biggrin.gif I have all these ideas running thru my head but I'm not sure I'll be able to pull them off. Since I'm very very new to this with no training as of yet (I take the Wilton course in April) how would I do the royal icing ladders? Will I need to use dowels & a cake board??and if so how do you cover the cake board so it doesn't show? Sorry if I ask to many questions I'm just a little green!!

If I did this right I added my very first cake that I made for my sons 2nd birthday.

Thanks for all your help in advance - This is a great help for me!!!!

that's a beautiful cake, I don't think you're going to need as much help as you're letting on....what I would do to make the chutes and ladders would be to just ...draw yourself several ladders and chutes on sheets of paper, the exact size that you want you could even trace them directlly off of a game board if you don't want to draw them freehand....then tape that sheet of paper down on a hard surface (something that you can move preferably, especially since you have kids LOL) I use a piece of wood....anyhow tape wax paper over top of your pattern and then make some royal icing...here is a good recipe it's antonia74's royal icing
This icing is mixed to a stiff consistency for outlining cookies, then can be thinned with warm water to fill in the cookie shape. I like to dry my cookies for at least 24 hours...and up to 48 hours before packaging them. This icing can be kept at room temperature in an air-sealed container for literally weeks, with a good re-mixing before you use it again. I haven't had great results with keeping it in the fridge...but un-tinted icing (i.e. white) seems to be okay from the freezer.
6 oz (3/4 cup) of warm water
5 Tablespoons meringue powder
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 kilogram (2.25 lbs.) powdered icing sugar
In mixer bowl, pour in the warm water and the meringue powder. Mix it with a whisk by hand until it is frothy and thickened...about 30 seconds.

Add the cream of tartar and mix for 30 seconds more.

Pour in all the icing sugar at once and place the bowl on the mixer.

Using the paddle attachment on the LOWEST speed, mix slowly for a full 10 minutes. Icing will get thick and creamy.

Cover the bowl with a dampened tea-towel to prevent crusting and drying.

Tint with food colourings or thin the icing with small amounts of warm water to reach the desired consistency.

then color it the appropriate colors that you need...put it in a decorator bag snip off a tiny bit of the end....I usually outline with a tip #1...seems to be more accurate for me...outline in whatever color you choose, I think most people just outline in black....let it dry for an hour or so after you've done all the oulines....then you're going to take all of your "filling in" colors and thin them out slightly with water so they're a little more runny....then you just fill in the outline like a coloring book....let it all sit for several days until it's rock hard....then peel it off the wax paper and stand them up on the side of your frosted cake, I think it will look awesome!!!! If this doesn't make sense to you (which is not a surprise with my instructions LOL ) feel free to pm me or whatever if you need anymore help. Omg I just realized I said chutes and ladders and you're making a Candy land cake...LOL LOL LOL I'm so sorry.........however Candyland has the squiggly different colors "chute like" thingies on it....so instead of chutes and ladders....you could just make some of those squiggly walkways with the different colored squares just like I gave the directions for.....that will be cool!!! That will carry along your whole Candy Land theme.........sorry about the ladders thing icon_redface.gif
