I am trying to ice mini bear 3D cakes with buttercream stars using buttercream icing #16 tip. When I squeeze the icing, IT WILL NOT STICK TO THE CAKE! It stays on the end of bag. My friend and I WASTED hours yesterday trying to get it to stay on cakes. I made the Wilton recipe last night, and today it still will not adhere to cake surface. I used the homemade cake release to bake cake, and surface is kind'of dry. I have even spread a little Karo syrup on it to see if icing would stick, IT WON'T! Please could someone tell me what I am doing wrong. I HAVE TO GET THIS DONE! Thank you so much ahead of time!

Did you do a crumb coat on the cake first? This should help your stars stick. Also maybe your icing is alittle to stiff?

Sounds to me that your icing is too thick. Try thinning it a little bit with water. If not maybe a crumb coat might help then put the stars on. With little crumb coat you won't see any areas between the stars if they aren't matched up just right too!

Good Luck!

I agree with revel & FatAndHappy, sounds like you may have to crumb coat (if it hasn't been) and thining your icing some.

First thing I thought was your icing is probably too thick. If you made the wilton class recipe and did not thin it down then it is probably too thick to release from the back. I would suggest a medium consistency.

I also agree with the above post that a light crumb coat would probably help a little. And then it will also help to cover and small areas missed with the stars.

I would agree also. Your icing is probably a little too thick and a nice crumb coat will help.

That happens to me ALOT, it's so annoying! What recipe are you using? It probably is too thick, I'm thinking about trying a different recipe to see if that helps.
