I'm fairly new to cake decorating, and have been taking tons of classes on it. How do I make a dummy cake? I would like to practice my techniques, but don't want to make a cake everytime, but on the other hand I need the structure to practice on. Also can a dummy cake be preserved, and if so how? I would like to save some of my creations, so display what I can do. Thanks so much! Jessica

A dummy cake is made from styrofoam (sp?). You just use real fondant/BC on it. I recommend using fondant - it doesn't chip off. Just coat the dummy with Crisco 1st.

Good luck!

If you're purchasing online, www.dallas-foam.com has a very extensive selection of cake dummies:

Whenever I do dummies I just wet the styrofoam then lay the fondant on it and that tends to work pretty well for me.
