Hello All,
First I want to say this site and the members are a great inspiration to a novice baker such as I. My question is about candy clay (hope someone can answer) I tried making some candy clay based on the recipe posted here. I allowed the clay to cool, my problem is the clay was hard and oily and cracked when I tried kneading it. Too much corn syrup? Too little? It was not at all like play-do/clay consistency. I did quarter the recipe icon_confused.gif since all I wanted to make was a bunny.
Sorry to ask all these questions, just trying to keep up with all the projects I have in mind (visit this site and walk away with more ideas icon_smile.gif )

Sounds like maybe you just need to knead the *#)@ out of it. I would think since it's too hard that not enough of the oil is incorporated into it. If its really too hard, maybe you can heat it up in the microwave for 5-10 seconds. I would play around with it and see what you can make of it. I have only made it a few times and each time I haven't had too much of a problem with it.

I hope that maybe someone else more experianced can help you out!

I had this happen to me when I made it one time....here's the problem....either you heated the corn syrup with the chocolate or your chocolate was too hot when you added the corn syrup to it....I had it happen to me too before....I was in a hurry and my chocolate was way too hot...and one time I just dumped the chocolate chips in with the corn syrup and popped the whole thing in the microwave and the cocoa butter (fat in chocolate) separates out and it's all oily and what's left turns into stone!!!!! Try melting your chocolate just until it's melted...let it sit for a min. or so and then add your corn syrup....maybe this will help.

I had it seperate on me too. But I decided to leave it til the next day (I was considering just throwing it out). I just kneaded it quite a bit, a little at a time. Just enough to fit into my hands. It turned out okay and I'm glad I didn't waste it icon_smile.gif

HTH!

The exact same thing happened to me. I left it for a day, went back to it and it was even harder. I ended up using fondant/gumpaste instead. I'm pretty skeptical of the candy clay thing right now. I followed the directions exactly. Of course, I used a WHOLE bag, so I wasted a whole bag.
