I have a birthday cake to make for my DD's 4th birthday but it's not for another couple of weeks...I have another birthday cake to make (inspired by a fellow CC'er) but it's not for about 3 weeks. I've been kinda planning this one as it will have MMF on it and I haven't worked with it yet. I haven't made a cake in about 2 weeks....I'm here all the time looking at these beautiful cakes, (and I need practice) but I have really no reason to make a cake. I've done a 'just because' cake once before...I guess I could do another one. I'm going to be signing up for the second Wilton class next week...but we don't make cakes until the last class....geez, I'll be really bad by then! icon_lol.gif

My husband suggested I get some small cake pans to 'practice' on. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow or next week.

So, what do you all do when you have no cakes to bake or decorate but you're really itching to do one??? Just curious.

i have a large family, so theres usually a birthday or anniversary or special event people will let me make a cake for. during down time i make practice cakes using new techniques. i'm doing two practice cakes getting ready for the easter cake im making. im using new recipes for these to see which ones i like best.

My cousin has decorated the pans before just as practice. At least then you aren't wasting ingredients and having to eat a lot of cake yourself!

i bake 'em, decorate 'em and send 'em off to work with dh! that way, it's certainly not getting wasted and i can practice on real cake. it's also a good way to get my name out there.

I freeze the buttercream all the time, my family is small and doesn't eat cake often. I've only made 1 fondant covered, but the folks here say you can freeze them too.
I put them in until they are good and solid; and then wrap well and squish all the air out. I've had them in for 3 weeks, and they were gobbled down.

I had this problem also...cake withdrawal. Until my whole family started using me for all their cake needs. I don't think anybody bakes anymore icon_smile.gif . Not that I am good, but I think they want me to succeed.

So your not alone.

Christi

I also enjoy doing the more down home cakes...when I am not decorating a bc cake I am doing hummingbird, jam, carrot , coconut etc. My dh work has ordered these from me. I like these also ... I don't have to stress because the bc is giving me problems cause there isn't any icon_biggrin.gif
