I see all these cakes with beautiful "hand painted" designs. I know you can paint with luster dust but what else can you paint with? A lot of the cakes I've seen the paint looks to solid or has a lack of sheen to be luster dust, so what do you use? I want to try a hand painted design but I kind of want to know what my options are. Any help would be great. Thanks!!!

You can also paint with petal dusts, which don't have that shimmer that luster dust has. Also powdered food colors, also gel food colors. People even paint with melted chocolate.

If they are in powder form I assume you mix with extravt or alchol, right? Is the gel food color the regular colors you use to color frosting, like wilton? Do you do anything to them or just use them how they come? Thanks!

Yep. I've been using Everclear lately and it's amazing how fast that stuff dries. Keeps your fondant from getting soggy.

Yep, the Wilton stuff. I'd only recommend it for small details, like eyes or writing. It takes forever dry and is very streaky on large areas, in my experience. I've just used them straight but I think, and I may be wrong, that you can thin them with a touch of water.

Have you done a forum search yet? I bet you can find tons of info.

I love painting on cakes. You're going to love it!

The tiger cake in my photos I used Americolor gell colors mixed with a little water to paint the cake. the orange I had bought from wilton and it was already thined to paint with. I think it is labeled as a fondant paint? unsure of that.

But it worked well for me.

Others have painted with BC or chocolate too.

I did a small wedding cake and used regular wilton colors with a little water - painted perfectly onto fondant. That way you have a large amount of colors too! It's in my photos - the bride and groom on the beach with a palm tree.
