Out Of Piping Gel... Karo Syrup For Pattern Transfer?
Decorating By cakesbykitty Updated 24 Mar 2007 , 11:04pm by cakesbykitty
I am out of piping gel and in the middle of doing a cake (i know, poor planning) can i use karo syrup to pipe onto parchment paper for my pattern transfer????????
I don't think the karo will hold shape the same as piping gel.
I've done transfers by coloring some buttercream black, piping on the back of the picture to be transferred, and pressed it into the buttercream. It's worked well.
The other option is to tape the picture onto a piece of glass (out of a picture frame) or plexiglass and to pipe the outlines with royal icing. Let it dry well and then press that into the finish coat of icing.
You can also put the picture on the cake and pin prick through the outline or run around the outline with a tracing wheel, etc.

thank you so much for your reply... but in this particular case it is just to put lettering on a piece of fondant. what do you think?
Are you applying cut out letters to the fondant or are you going to "print" letters on the fondant?
If you're going to print the letters on the fondant, another option is if you have edible food markers, you can outline the letters on parchment and while the ink is still wet press it onto the fondant. I do this one letter at a time. Then, you can outline them more completely and fill them in with more edible food marker or royal.
If no edible markers, a tip #1 used like a pen (just scraped along the outline of the letters on the parchment) with buttercream or royal would be my choice. Then, you can then outline them a bit heavier and fill them in. Royal, obviously, will harden more and not smear once dried.
If I'm applying cut out letters, I usually just eyeball it--sorry.

you are so sweet for all your help. i am obviously not very good at explaining what i am trying to do. if you print your writing off the computer (in reverse, mirror) and put parchment over it you can use piping gel to write it out (in reverse) then flip it over on to your cake/fondant and you have invisible lines to follow when you pipe your letters. I am doing this on black fondant so i don't think the markers (though brilliant, i had wondered about that myself) would work. I also want to tell you that I AM INSANELY JEALOUS... i just saw your ticker and you are doing the cake cruise!!!!!!!!!! We will all want details and pictures! Kit
Here is a recipe for homemade piping gel
1/3 cup of sugar
1TB cornstarch
1/4 c lemon juice
1/4 cup water
Combine the sugar and cornstarch. Gradually add juice and then water.
Stir over high heat until the mixture boils and thickens. Whisk so the mixture is smooth with no lumps.
Cool and use or color then use.
Well, Kit, black fondant changes all of the parameters, doesn't it ![]()
What color will the letters be and what will they be made out of?
Black gel/paste color would stay glossy for awhile--like piping gel. Might be worth a try on a scrap.
