I was just thinking that since modeling clay is so widely available, in MANY different colors, and since people don't eat the figures anyway...why not do them from clay? Is there any reason not to?

I can see your point, but I would hestitate to put anything on the cake that's not edible (with the exception of flowers and toys). Wouldn't the clay get soft from the icing? Would the clay melt into the frosting? Would the taste of clay bleed into the cake/frosting? Just my concerns...Jodie

I have made clay character candles (fake candles) for a cake, but I was very careful not to have the polymer clay pieces touch anything edible. (Even though the package said nontoxic, that doesn't mean edible!)

I put the clay pieces on skewers and then put plastic wrap on the bottom, extending a bit past the edges, so that the icing wouldn't come in touch with the clay.

At the time, I didn't know what I know now about fondant.

People eat most everything off a cake, so it's important to remember that. They think "it's on a cake, why can't I eat it!" Also the interaction of the chemicals in clay with the cake and icing could pose a problem also.

I know of several people who have used Polymer Clays to make wedding toppers and figurines. They just glued the figure to a food safe plastic base. then if need be pipd frosting over as much of the base as possible then just lifted the topper with frosting off.

Hmm....I guess I never thought about the clay touching the cake. Good point. If I decide to use it, I'll put something between it and the cake. Thanks!
