I'm just curious, really. My husband and I were talking last night and he said, "Why has this become so popular lately?" I said, "Maybe it's always been that way and it's just me who's recently gotten on the bandwagon." Any of you seasoned decorators know the answer?

I've always enjoyed it. But, as a NEW WMI I sure HOPE it's on the rise! LOL Just kidding.

I think it probably is...lots more media in which to market products. I remember YEARS ago I had to order all my stuff from a catalog (I think it was Sugarcraft) either by phone (no 800 numbers then!) OR go to a shop 45 miles from my home and pay double the price and THEN couldn't get everything I needed!

I'm going to stop now....I have REALLY DATED myself! LOL

I think it has always been popular, but there ar more media outliets like the TV shows and the Internet that lets you see what everyone else is up to. I think there also is an obsession in the US with doing things "professionally" meaning it is perceived that it is no longer good enough to make a cake for your kids, for example, but you have to try to make one that would be good enough to sell. you can't be a "cook," you have to be a "chef." I'm not making a judgment about this, just making an observation.

I agree that it has been around and some of just decided to hop on the band wagon. I personally had no interest until I wanted a specific cake for my daughter and couldn't find anyone to do it... so I did it and I found my niche... or at least a hobby. Reality shows dominate the tube these days, so having cooks and cake decorators... and the food network showing all of the competitions makes it more alluring to others!

I want to get into it because my Mom has decorated cakes since I was 3 and I figure I can learn from the best (in my opinion anyways)!!!!

Wanting to do a nice b-day cake for my daughter is what started my passion with it. The more research I did and the more I learned(WOOT FOR CC), I found something I truely enjoy!

I think things like Food Network has increased the desire to decorate AND the desire to buy cool cakes. I know that "Ace of Cakes" has helped generate a little extra local interest in my own 3D cakes, so that is cool.

A while back, the scrapbook aisle was the 'big' thing; then jewelry making pushed that over; now, the cake aisle is competing with them both. I think trends just come in spurts and before long, something else will come along.

However, I still make many trips to the scrapbook aisle and then head right over to the cake aisle icon_wink.gif)

Definitely. I think it is due to several things, local Wilton classes which were not always around, computers which lead to cake forums, and now all of the television shows that feature cakes. I think Martha Stewart gets first credit for that, and then the Food Network opened up with wonderful challenges and shows like Duff and Ace Of Cakes.
