Hi everyone, I just got an order for a castle cake for a renaissance themed wedding. The cake will have a cake topper on it, but the client wants to make the sides of the cake look like stones. Any suggestions as to how to do that? It will be iced in buttercream, not fondant.
Thanks in advance! icon_smile.gif

You can buy an impression mat (cobblestone pattern) and once your buttercream has set/crusted a bit you can apply the mat.

CountryKitchens has a 5 piece impression mat set for about $12. I've ordered it and it should arrive today.

I just had my 3rd castle cake over this last weekend. When I went to my local cake store before I saw that they had just gotten in some of the cobblestone impression mats. They sold as a set with I think 3 mats in a pack for about $8. I never wanted to spend the money. Well...the last time I went they had just sets and then individual for $1.89. I threw caution to the wind and bought the one. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!! I used it with gumpaste and LOVE LOVE LOVED it! It made my castle look so much more like a castle with very little effort. Now I can't wait to order the brick impression mat too. I would highly suggest getting one - they are very easy to work with.

P.S. - I don't have a pic in my gallery of it yet, but I will put it in tonight.

I made my own impression mat using a glue gun and a vinyl mat from Walmart. It cost $0.25 and works great...I'll post a picture next week. icon_smile.gif

Okay, docfarms (since you are the expert) this is my first castle cake and I am a little nervous about some of the design details. They want stairs going from one tier to another. I don't want to use a plastic set since it needs to conform to the side of the cake. What do you recommend I use? I was thinking gumpaste, but not sure if that would be best or not. Ideas?

I"ve never done a wedding castle cake, but have done a few castle cakes for birthddays. It may take longer, but tip#12 works really well. Once the icing sets just mash it a little with your finger and there's your cobblestone.
