My kid missed the bus this morning through no fault of ours and the roads are bad enough that my husband won't let me take him in until they have cleared them so he's going to be counted late.
We've been having lots of snow and the roads are absolutly horrid because there is ice underneath. Saturday I went in the ditch, Sunday my cousin-in-law and FIL went in and several buses were stuck this morning.
I called the bus garage a little after 8am when the bus was about 35 minutes late and was told the bus would be stuck for another 20 minutes so I set the timer and my child took his coat off. Ten minutes into the 20 minutes the bus left our house (my child had gone to the bathroom). Turns out she was talking about the wrong bus.
I called the principal and he is going to count my child late once 9am comes around because that's school policy never mind that if she had told me about the right bus he wouldn't have missed it and I wouldn't be waiting for them to clear the road.
I really don't want to go in the ditch with a 7 year old and a 3 year old.
Right now I'm debating even taking him in at all, it's not like he's going to be missing much anyway.

Sorry this is so long I just am so frustrated about the school right now.

This is why i HATE HATE HATE strict schools. Goodness man, they did all they can to get the kid there. I mean you called to check for the bus. I wouldn't even have done that. Policy or not, you tried. This is why i left one really strict school. I was stuck doing things i hated and policy was above helping the student.

When policy is above the student, you just have to decide wether they're really out to help the student. That's just my opinion. But i hope karma gets the guy a good poke in the eye. And i'd let the kid stay home. Lol As long as they aren't missing anything big.

We live in a rural area and of the school choices this is the best of the available, most of the others are the same but face budget problems or are worse. We have 2 actual full time teachers with 17 kids plus a student teacher and they have this set up through 3rd grade.
It's after 11 and they still haven't cleared the road we're on so he's not going in. As for him missing anything we just got his midterm report and his lowest grade was a 98 and falling behind is the last thing on our minds.
The teachers at our school are wonderful and will often bend the rules as far as they can to do what the kids need. It's the administration that can be a headache.

Hi I was just browsing and found this conversation. I find it strange that if the roads are that bad, why didn't they cancel school? Do they want a law suit when a bus goes off the road and kids may be hurt? Here if the buses run and the parent thinks the conditions are too bad to put the kid on the bus, they have that right, yes they will be counted as absent, but still you have the choice. If I called the super and he told me that stuff my next call would be to the school board. Don't let the administration intimidiate you. You have rights as a parent. Good luck.

We were surprised that they didn't run the buses late, around here people are somewhat used to bad roads but almost all the kids have to ride the bus in our district and alot of the roads are gravel and very curvy. The radio spent 10 minutes with detailed road conditions throughout the state and had absolutly no delays or cancelations.
