Hi, friends...For Easter,I want to make several 3D egg cakes, and I'd love to have them covered in a chocolate frosting that looks more like a chocolate-covered store-bought egg. Would a ganache work? How to keep it shiny? How much would I need? Can a ganache be decorated with buttercream decorations? I'll have to have them done by Friday night to deliver Saturday morning... Any and all suggestions for a lovely, shiny chocolate covered egg cake will be greatly appreciated! Thanks - PAT

Hi Pat

Cheftaz recipe from here is very shiney because of the butter in it. I love it by the way. I don't see why it wouldn't work on your eggs.

I have never piped buttercream on ganache, but I am sure someone out there has. I have piped the ganache on ganache after it has been in the fridge for a while.

By the way Cheftaz recipe is in the recipe section under choc. ganache 1

I would use a thick ganache to ice it smooth then put a ganache glaze to get the shiny look. icon_cool.gif

have you thought about using a chocolate fondant?

if you do decide to pour ganache over it, make sure the cake is on a board its size, not larger and placed on top of a cooling rack so the drippings can fall down instead of pool up on the plate.

you should be fine to pipe bc on top of the ganache AFTER it has cooled and set. (chilling it to set it would be a good idea. ) sounds YUMMY! i LOVE LOVE LOVE ganache!
