Anyone ever thought of working/interning in a bakery to get all the ins and outs? I want to open a bakery but know it won't be for many years down the road. I want to see how others do and learn from them. closest bakery to me is 40 miles. I am a teacher so am off during the summers. My question is how would I set something like this up?

Mandze....I would maybe visit a bakery or two & talk to the owner or manager. See if they are looking for help & take your portfolio if you have one. I would think with wedding season coming up now would be a perfect time to try to get into a bakery. You might start out making the icing, filling bags, prepping cakes, etc....but you could learn alot working around experienced people. If you want to open a bakery someday, this would be a perfect place to start.

I would think it would be best to go in person instead of calling on the phone. This way you might further...I hope this helped a little

I've thought about doing that too. I don't know if I could stand prep work, but it might be better than shelling out $1000s for a school. So are you thinking of starting up a bakery with lots of different baked goods, or primarily cakes? I can only imagine how much there would be to learn about a bakery - with all the different things they make. At least you're beginning to follow that dream and make it happen. Best wishes!!!!

Go in person with your portfolio if you have 1 and talk to them.
Oh ya there would definitely be a lot of prep work to start with but they will also give you a chance to proove your baking skills too

If I was still a "sous chef" in the hotel I worked at and someone from this site came to me with the pics of their cakes I would hire them on the spot. And I would have them making their cakes right from day 1
