I am going to be making a scratch cake for the first time. But I do NOT have butter milk! I do have whole milk and heavy whipping cream. Can I use any of these instead of butter milk? Do I need to go to the store?? Thanks Megan

Do you have sour cream?? That would work in place of the buttermilk.

Vinegar and milk is a great substitute as already mentioned, you can also use cream of tartar but that's a bit more pricey because you need to use quite a bit. I've used buttermilk and a substitute in the same type of cake and I don't think I really can tell a difference.

beccakelly is right that you can make buttermilk. For 1 cup of milk though it is just 1 tsp. of lemon juice, I forgot and used a TBSP. once and came out with a chocolate lemon cake that I had to throw away.

Yep, I use the milk and vinegar method as well.
