Hi there

I am just about to do a butterfly cake for a girls birthday this weekend.
But I spent a good few hours awake last night thinking that I could do things better!! always last minute with the planning! LOL!

Well I was going to use the wilton butterfly pan, but I feel it is rather small looking..... has anyone made a cake (layered) using two heart pans (for the wings) trimmed a bit at the point and then used large cupcakes for the butterflies body? What would be more professional....
I just need someone to tell me to stop making more work for myself and the wilton pan is just fine (or not)!! LOL!
Thanks for letting me blah on a bit! I think I just need some sleep!

Wendy

Depends on how many you need to serve?

I think the heart pans would work get, so long as that's how many servings you need. icon_smile.gif

Wendy,
I have a butterfly cake in my photos made with an old Wilton pan (found it on eBay). It wasn't that small - almost about a 9 x 13".

thumbs_up.gif I love your idea with the cupcakes for the body and usuing heart shaped cakes for the wings, it sounds like a fun cake to make that way!! The pan would be easier, but i think (if it were me) that i would feel more proud of the cupcakes/heart shaped wings.

I made my butterfly cake using these instruction (although I made it two layer) and used swiss rolls for the body.

thanks everyone

I just can't decide...... it's not even an issue about the cake servings it's more me being silly and trying to make more work for myself when i don't have anytime to do this cake.

well maybe another sleepless night over a cake! LOL

You can look at the butterfly in my photo gallery. I used a regular butterfly cake put on top of a 12x18 sheet cake. I made a couple of tiny cakes and cut them and put them under the butterfly. I did this so the butterfly would be on an angle rather than flat on the cake and look like it was flying over a field of daisies. Just be careful, you may have to put skewers in the wings that aren't supported by cake - otherwise the will droop. HTH
