I am going to take the Wilton's Fondant/Gumpaste class next month and the instructor has told us to only use Wilton Fondant. I hate the stuff. My family won't eat it. I'm thinking of making my own and just face the music with the instructor. What do you think? I know alot of you are WIs How would you feel?
Thanks in advance.

(ps if it will really upset her I dont think I'll make my own. It's just i hate wiltons fondant)

Wow, I can't answer how a WI would feel but I can answer the part of "what would you do?" I'd make and take MMF or whatever type of fondant I wanted. The way I see it, I'm paying for the class, I'm not going to get flunked out, and I'm the one who's going to have to eat the cake, so why should it really matter? I would tell my instructor about it beforehand and explain to her why I'm bringing my own (leaving out the part of not being flunked out).

Just my opinion.

I have said this before, although I absolutely hate the taste of Wilton rolled fondant, I find it to be an exceptional learning tool. It is more resilient than other rolled fondants, which enables a fondant newbie to learn how to handle fondant before moving on to another type or brand which may be more delicate to handle.

I would definitely use the Wilton fondant for the decorations, but as far as covering the cake? I will choose something my family will eat, thank you!

I agree with Playingwithsugar I am hoping to take that class in May and I see it as a chance to find my fondant. You know that one I like! I plan on using wilton products for the flowers/decor but not the main cake covering.

I am a WI and I wouldn't feel bad at all as long as you were comfortable working with the MMF. The Wilton Fondant is a wonderful learning tool. I love the texture and it does make the first attempts at covering a cake with fondant easier.

I love MMF and would definitely cover my cakes with it if I had the choice, but only after I had learned how to use fondant and was comfortable. I love Wilton Fondant for this purpose. Also, if you need some almond extract into the fondant prior to putting it onto the cake, the taste will be much better.

These are some of my ideas, but I wanted to let the student know that not all WI's would have a problem with them bringing their own fondant.

As long as you're not covering the whole cake w/ it, I would say get the smallest Wilton fondant package they offer and use it to make the 'extras' that go on the cake, and keep it around for practicing. It is a great consistancy and will help you know when your own MMF is 'just right.' Use your MMF for covering the cake, that way you can take the wilton stuff off and still eat it!

Yah, if you haven't worked with fondan too much, I would buy the wilton stuff just to get used to it. But if you do have some experience with it, make your own.

I brought my own, and I didn't have a problem. icon_smile.gif

Since Wilton's is easier for a beginner to use for covering a cake, I think it might be best, if you have never covered a cake with fondant, to use Wilton's with almond flavoring--if you still think it tastes nasty. Just tell you family or friends to peel if off when it comes time to eat the cake. That first cake is just a learning experience. Once you know how the process works, then you can get rid of the training wheels (Wilton's Fondant) and use the good stuff.

My problem is that if I am having to make a cake and cover it in fondant if my friends and family don't like it and won't eat it then they might not be willing to try it next time and certainly won't request it soooo when do I get the chance to try the "good stuff" on them. I personally have never liked the taste of fondant either but I loved the look of it and the ease of use from Course 2. I figure this might be the last chance I have to try fondant before I have to give up the ghost!

I have to agree with those that are saying use a small package of Wilton for the flowers, etc. Those kind of decorations CAN be eaten but they don't have to be eaten...... by using the Wilton fondant, you can be assured of a reliable consistency so there will be no distractions during class. If you use your own and it doesn't handle like the Wilton stuff (for detail work, etc.) you will miss part of the lesson trying to get your fondant to co-operate. That is what happend to me during class when I insisted on making fondant (hadn't discovered mmf yet icon_sad.gif ) and she was irritated that I wasn't able to follow along due to my train-wreck fondant.

Since it is a "WILTON" class, and they are there to sell their products, I would use the Wilton products for the classes..... you can use what ever you want at home..........Peel it off before giving it to the family........... I would equate that with taking Kentucky Fried Chicken into an Olive Garden and eating it there..... tapedshut.gif

LOL. I think the fondant could be brought in quietly w/o it being noticed. If it is noticed, simply say you like the other fondant or better yet..."oh, sorry, I have an allergy to an ingredient in Wilton's fondant." icon_lol.gif

hummmm I think I just may buy the fondant and take it off when my family eats it. Less feathers ruffled that way. I have made fondant and used wiltons before. I like both to work with. Only mmf to eat! icon_wink.gif thanks for all the responses!!
