I was curious what the deal is with character cakes. Is it not legal for me to be baking and selling those cakes? Am I okay to make character cakes as long as I'm doing them as FBCT and not the character pans? I'm just really curious. I don't want to be breaking any laws.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's illegal to replicate and sell any licensed character if you haven't obtained the rights to do so. It doesn't matter if you use one of the Wilton character pans or do a FBCT. As long as the character is recognizable, it's a violation. The penalties are not worth the risk! icon_smile.gif

Sorry, but I'm not up on the cake lingo yet. What is FBCT? I've got a request for a Star Wars cake. I was thinking about writing "Star Wars" and drawing lightsabers. Is that illegal too? I do sell cakes out of my home licensed kitchen.

FBCT = frozen buttercream transfer

I don't know what I'm going to do when people want character cakes. This stinks!!

There is another good thread on this page about what you CAN do to a cake:

Sooo... let me make sure I'm clear. For example... I can buy a Wilton character pan and make a cake for my son's birthday but I can't make that same cake and sell it to my SIL for my nephew's birthday. Right?

Exactly. If you made it for your nephew it would have to be a gift from your heart. icon_smile.gif I did this for my niece with her Elmo cake last year.
