I just love the all of the helmet cakes on this site. Can anyone share some advice of how they made theirs? We are big football people I think will be great to do as my nephews b-day cake! TIA!!!
most use some combination of sports ball and round layers
after that -- all depends upon the look you want.
for example in sketch below-- half sports ball on top of rounds cut in half and stacked to get the open space of the helmet (be sure to support the overhand)
other just make a fully solid mound and black out area that would be open (easier)
then of course have to decide BC or fondant (i prefer fondant)
and how to get logos on it --- some gifted ones paint it on by hand. others make cutouts of fondant, and other use edible images.
browse the gallery for many variations and ideas.

The biggest problem I have had with them is the face mask thingy in the front (ok not big on football here
)
I tried making it out of MMF--kept breaking--so I covered the broken part with grass ![]()
Since then I have gotten a little better in my cake making and decided not everything has to be edible ![]()
I now make a face mask thingy from floral wire and cover it with MMF. That way I don't have to worry about it breaking, drying time, and I can bend it to shape. Just let the customer know!! ![]()
ohhh ohhhh Doug your a genius!!! I bet DH could talk the football coach out of one!! OR better yet I bet he could be bribed with cakeballs!!!
I am just worried about the back looking funny, cause I don't want the top to be rounded and the back side all flat! DOUG!!! You are my hero, thanks for the great design concept! I am going to have to pm you with every cake I make!! Thanks for the great advice!
