Hi Ladies..
I was hoping that someone could help me & tell me the difference between preserves, jams & fruit spreads? I want to use them in my fillings & didn't know the difference. There seems to be more flavors in fruit spreads and jams than preserves. Can I use all as a filling mixed w/ cream cheese or what not? Or only preserves?

Thanks!

preserves and jam are pretty much the same thing - thicker, with more fruit chunks. Jelly is thinner, no fruit chunks. and fruit spreads are just that, spreadable fruit - mainly pureed, mimimal processing. (at least in my own little world and a grandma that taught me to make jelly)

Preserves are made with pieces of fruit in them, jelly is made with juice, I think and I'm pretty sure jams are made with fruit purees. I use Polaner All Fruit spread. It doesn't have added sugar and isn't as sweet as the others, has more of a real fruit taste.

Jams - Are boiled with sugar and sometimes (well most of the time) they have added pectin.

Jellies - Are made like jam but with just the juice of the fruit.

Fruit Spreads - These a mushed up fruit that have been boiled down for several hours (think apple butter)

Preserves - Are particaly mushed / cut up fruit in it's own jelly or in a jelly made with liqour.

- I only know this because I went on a jamming / canning binge last year icon_smile.gif

Excuse me, I think Polaner does have sugar but not as much and does not have high fructose corn syrup like most of the others. Sorry about that.
