Does anyone know of the new passport regulations? I heard that if you are flying by air over canada or mexico right now you need a passport, but if you are driving through canada or mexico you wont need one until next year .. anyone have any ideas?

That is how I understand it. So I have to get my butt in gear and save up money for our whole family--it is so expensive! We have family in Hamilton and we like to take trips to the Canadian side of the falls every so often. It really stinks because we wea lways make last minute plans to go up. I guess it won;t be that big of a deal once we get the passports, but ugh... Okay, I'm lazy... icon_rolleyes.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

That is the way I understand it too. I really just think it stinks to have to have one to go across to Canada.

no youre not lazy .. we travel through canada to get to new york where my in laws live because it shaves about three or more hours off of our trip .. I think its ridiculous to have to have a passport to get through there too .. and they are expensive! the in laws told us they would pay for them because we would only need them to get out to their house, but who wants to acutally ask them to shell out that money?! sigh ..

I took this off a government web site I hope it helps.

* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

You need a passport if you are traveling by air. If you are travelling by land or sea you won't need one until next year. I didn't think it was to expensive because it is valid for 10 years. But then again I do use it at least once a year. My sister just had to get one and the lines were long! It's an easy process, you just have to make it to the office.

I read that passports are a lot cheaper if you have someone else take the picture .. like at a rite-aid (pharmicutical chain store) and then take it with you to the post office or so .. anyone know if this is true?

Just a side note..i believe passports will also be required for taking a cruise. So make sure you check when this goes into effect b/c it takes some time to get a passport!

Granted it was almost 10 and 5 years ago now, but the post office wouldn't take a passport photo. I had to go somewhere else. My first one I got at a kinkos then the next time the closest place was my AAA travel agency.

I did see that you can have them done at Wal-mart photo studios now too. (another item for the one stop shop)
