Hi everyone-

I just felt the need to vent. I'm a newby, but I've been decorating cakes for my friends birthdays for a couple of years just for fun. I've been on this site for a few months reading and learning and studying diligently! My dayjob is in rock n roll. My co-workers birthday is tomorrow and ive been planning on doing a "Fist of Rock" cake for weeks. Well, its not turning out so well. I made MMF (for the first time), the white almost sour cream cake (for the first time) and rice krispie treats to mold the hand.

The cake turned out great. THe mmf, a bit difficult to work with, I kept having a hard time peeling it off the matt after rolling it out to cover the cake. Now I just covered the "fist" in it and it just looks TERRIBLE! Its melting and its not smooth and it just looks awful.

I'm trying to figure out plan B. Im so tired. I just painted the cake with gold luster dust. I really want the cake to kick butt!

Anyway, just needed to vent. I dont even want to post the pictures, although you'd probably get a good laugh.

I've had trouble with MMF sticking also. If you grease your mat with a small amount of crisco, that should take care of that problem. Hmm, never worked with Rice Krispie treats. Is it possible to put them in a zip loc bag and smash it a bit with a hammer to get it to smooth better? Just a thought. Maybe after you mold the hand, put it in the freezer to harden up a bit before you cover it with the fondant. I wish I could be of more help, but I'm pretty new too.

i realize that by the time you read this, it will probably be too late, but hopefully it will still be helpful. Definitely keep the mat and your hands greased. Before adding the rice kirspies, crush them up with your hands. But, in doing this you will loose the volume, so you will have to make more recipes of the treats to equal the amount that you need. (found that out this weekend). Before covering the treats, give them a good coat (or two) of buttercream and smooth. (This will also work well on uncrushed cereal.) This, along with crushing the cereal (if you have time), should give a smoother result.

I added crisco to the mat and that definitely helped! I read about crushing the rice krispies last night AFTER i had already made them. So I guess better luck next time. Also, I didnt wait ANY time before I covered it with the fondant (i didnt let the frosting dry) So I think that was my main problem.

I just made a skull and crossbones out of blackish fondant, i guess thats as rock n roll as im gonna get tonight!

Thank you both for your input!

HUGS! I dont have any experience with MMF, just regular fondant. Sorry you're having a rough time dear. Everytime I make a cake for someone they always love it, but I tend to not think they are good enough - it gets better! icon_smile.gif

Did you first cover the fist in buttercream to smooth it out? I have never sculpted anything, but this sounds like it would work.

I know its too late but I got the tuperware pastry mat and NOTHING sticks to it (yet, don't want to jinx myself). I didnt believe it, but it works. My MMF does stick to my hands though so I use crisco, it works great! Hope this helps in the future. I'm sure your cake looks great, post it for us!

I think my main mistake was that I covered the hand in frosting, and immediately covered it in the fondant. I didn't think to let it dry. And all the while I was thinking "Duff makes it look sooooo easy!". UGH!

I will post a picture shortly. It turned out completely different then i had planned. It was 1:30AM and my brain was no longer being creative!

Thanks everyone

If you decide to give it a whirl again, try making it out of solid fondant mixed with gumpaste and whittle away. It is heavy, but wasn't too bad as far as forming it. I had my own hand to pose for me - icon_lol.gif. The piece will start to dry quickly but you can put it in a plastic bag when you want to rest it. Turned out pretty good, it was my first extremity forming. Color used was ivory with a hint of brown.
