I have had fluid on my left ear for over 2 months now and I feel like I'm gonna lose my mind!!!!!
I've had it checked 3 times and there's no infection...it's just fluid. I feel like I have a marble in my ear. It's hard to sleep, I can feel my pulse and I can't hear!
I've been taking decogestants and antihistamines and it hasn't helped. I'm amazed at how crazy this is making me. ![]()
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm about ready to stick a knitting needle in there!
My Dr. and my allergist just say "it'll eventually go away". ![]()
Get another opinion. I am no doctor but if you feel something is wrong you go find someone that will check again. No offense to your current doctors but if you are that sick you need to see someone. I hope you find the problem soon! Keep us informed!

Unfortunately, you can have fluid on your ear without an infection. It can be left over from a cold or sinus infection, which I get chronically. I've had fluid before, but never for this long. Maybe I was just lucky before. I really don't think there is anything you can do beyond decogestants and antihistamines, but I'm ready to try anybody's home remedy! What could it hurt?
Maybe you can get a referral to an ENT (Ear,Nose, Throat) doctor and have your ears professionally vacumned. My daughter produces excess ear wax and gets her ears professionally cleaned every 3-4 months. They use this tiny vacumn/suction to get all the stuff out. I bet this will get the fluid out too.
When I was a kid and swam a lot, I would get water in my ears all the time. There was a product then called "Swimmer's Ear" I think it was mostly alcohol that evaporated the water. I don't know if this would help you at all, but it would be worth looking in to.
Also try using ear candles (which can be found at your local health food stores), you may also want to see a chiropractor to make sure you don't need an adjustment. If your back and neck are out of alignment it might not be able to drain properly.
My one BIL used to get ear infections all the time as a child, so much in fact that they wanted to put tubes in his ears. My MIL took him to a local chiropractor, after one adjustment his ears just started draining black/orange crap out of them. My husband was there when it happened and he said it was really gross, but he didn't have the ear infection problems like he used to.
My DD used to get ear infections about two a month from December to June. Once the infections cleared up, she had fluid in there for a good 3 months. Our doctor also told us it would go away on its own.
JodieF....I have this very same problem! I completely understand how annoying it is!! After awhile your it even affects your balance and appetite!! My ENT thought I was nuts and told me the same "it will eventually go away". He was the one that was nuts! Anyway, this is what I do when it happens to me...first I mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and filtered water and have my dh pour into my ear (about 1T total) and I lay on the couch with my head on a pillow with that ear facing up for about 2-3minutes and then quickly dump my head over into a towel (this usually works) IF that doesn't work I use the Swimmer's Ear (you can only use this if you do not have a hole in your ear drum) IF that doesn't work I put 2 drops of Floxin Otic (RX only) in my ear and rub the back and down the jaw line with Vics Vapo Rub take 2T decongestant and go to bed and pray! Mind you I do NOT do all 3 of these treatments in the same day...you could really irritate your ear canal/drum that way. Wait atleast 24 hours before moving onto the next treatment. I've been dealing with this off and on for 10 years. I hope you find a remedy that works for you!
sweet...thanks so much for the suggestions! I'm going to give one (or all!) of them a try.
With my chronic sinus and allergies, I deal with a lot of garbage in my head all the time, and have for as long as I can remember. But, the ear fluid is what makes me crazy. I've had it before, but never for this long.
So, thanks again. ![]()
I also had this problem and the one thing that my doctor (ENT) did was put an earwic in my ear. He has to place it in the ear and I guess it wics out the fluid. (not sure) Now I make sure that when I wash my hair, I turn my head to the side and shake my head very hard until I hear the fluid drain. I have also used swimmers ear, but try not to use it often. It is very important that you do not use Q-tips in your ear. This will push any wax back into the ear canal that stops the ear from draining.
I had a lot of problems with my ears last year and my family doctor told me it was fluid and prescribed antiboitics. It kept getting worse so I went to an Ear, Nose and Throat Dr. He did several tests and it turned out there was no fluid after all. I don't mean to sound rude, but I think you should see an ENT because sometimes general doctors can mis-diagnose since it's not their area of expertise.
You don't seem rude at all, but I have seen my ENT, my family Dr. and my allergist (although not specifically for just this problem). They all said there's fluid, no infection. It's left from a bad flu bug I had a few months ago. Right now I'm on an antibiotic for a sinus infection.
I've had x-rays, 3 cat scans, sinus surgery, found out the roots of my wisdom tooth is in my left sinus, I have SIX wisdom teeth altogether and my ear tubes are normal sized in the past 7 years.
I think I have one of the most examined heads east of the Mississippi!
The DH bought me some swimmers ear stuff. I'll try that. Insurance won't cover a chiropractor and I'm not too keen on them anyway (just my own previous experience). I do really appreciate all your comments and suggestions!
i have a problem with allergies and my doc put me on sigulair and clariten or clarinex both at the same time andit worked great. i haven't had another sinus infection since. you may want to ask about it. they are both once a day pills. it might be worth giving it a try.
on the clariten or clarinex, one is over the counter and the other isn't claritan is cheaper so once i ran out of the other i started using clariten.
I agree, get another opinion. A relative had a similar problem with her ear for several years. Turns out it was a sign of a rare disease that attacked her joints and other organs in her body. There were only a few hundred people diagnosed with it in the country at the time. It has a long name, but it's short name is Wegeners. Probably not your problem, but it definitely helps to get more information.

Ooooh...ear candles. You find them at the herb stores. They look scary but are great. I have the same problem with fluid in my left ear. I feel like I'm talking in a can and always feel pressure. No infection for me as well. I use a garlic oil with tea tree oil. The garlic is a natural antibiotic and the tea tree oil acts as an astringent. Works everytime. Good luck!

It's basically creates a vacuum to pull the crap out of your ears.
Now some people say it doesn't work, but I believe it does because I've seen ear wax left behind from path of it being sucked up by the ear candle. But not all ear candles are burned the same, if you don't follow the burning instructions included with them you can burn your ear canal.
Example of this is with my husband, he bought some ear candles that had to be burned, lady at the health food store told him to only burn it down 1-2". My husband wasn't listening very good and failed to mention these instructions to me. So I started to burn one of them like normal, once it got past the point where I should have stopped burning the candle, the hot wax from the candle flowed back into my husband's ear canal. I think he has some residual hearing loss from it that he won't get tested for.
(He's being a typical male in that department.) We went to the ER and he was the talk of the town among the medical staff. (Which I think served him right for not paying attention like he should have.)
So just be cautious and use with care.
I know that the make swiimer's ear drops that dry out the water in the ear. I am no doctor but that might help!
